Western Netball held it’s annual prizegiving ceremony yesterday at the Hotel Coachman, in Palmerston North.
Achievements were celebrated in all areas including Bench Officials, Umpires, Coaches and Managers and Players. Special recognition was given to Manawatu umpire Angela Armstrong-Lush, who recently was awarded the New Zealand ‘A’ Grade Umpire award. Angela is the Western region’s very first ‘A’ Umpire.
Taranaki umpire Paddy Leatherby was named as Western Netball Umpire of the Year and a described as a humble and hard-working umpire that gives much time and support for the development of other umpires in her centre, as well as continually striving for personal improvement – she recently gained the New Zealand ‘C’ Umpire award.
The Bench Official of the Year shield was given to Judith Smith of Manawatu - another very busy volunteer that has officiated at many events this year including the NZ Silver Ferns v Australia Diamonds match, but still finding time to develop other Bench Officials along the way.
Most Promising Player of the Western U19 team was awarded to Manawatu player Sarah Thomson, whilst Sheridan Bignall (Manawatu) scooped up Most Promising Player for the Western Lois Muir Challenge team and Most Promising Player for the Western One team. Sheridan was described as a dynamic player with speed and agility and a determined effort to exceed fitness requirements.
Jodi Beaumont (Manawatu) was named Most Promising Player of the Western U21 team with reference to her dedication, determination and a maturity that also saw her share the Buttars/Constantine Cup for Leadership of the Western U21 team, with Sheridan Bignall. Defensive Player of the Region was a shared award, given to Erica Burgess(Taranaki) and Katarina Cooper (Manawatu), for their high work rate, and particularly when stepping up to fill the void left by Jodi Beaumont’s absence in finals week of Lion Foundation National Champs (Western One team).
Attacking Player of the Region was awarded to Chantelle Ngaia (Taranaki) for her crafty and consistent play throughout the season. Chantelle also took away the Western Netball Player of the Year trophy, again for her consistent play but also her phenomenal shooting statistics. A shooting average of 98% helped to earn Western the Lady Jane Blundell trophy for Highest Goals Scored at the Lion Foundation Champs.
Western was also awarded the Gisborne Cup for Highest Standard of Uniform at the Lion Foundation National Champs.
